I thought I would volunteer at Second Chance and deal with cats.I figured I was safe and wouldn’t take any home. Well that definitely didn’t work out, but I love everyone that I adopted. After 4 years with Second Chance I can't see myself not volunteering. I had no idea of how it would change my life.
The joy and satisfaction you feel when one of the cats who was unresponsive and scared lets you touch him and hold him and then the best reward, the purr that starts out slowly and builds to a louder pitch. You see the softening of the look in their eyes, the body language changes and you are trusted. Even better is when you come back and notice the same cat is now standing and meowing to greet you.
Thank heaven for  Second Chance because that is exactly what it is for these abandoned or abused cats.  It’s their chance to experience a warm space with food and water and a clean litter box. Second Chance is not just place but a concept where they learn to trust again and feel loved. Last it’s a good place to stay until they find their forever home. So I guess you can say Second Chance changes more than just the cat’s life; it changes everyone connected to that cat.

I started volunteering at Second Chance August 2010, and what started out as an opportunity for my son to receive community service hours became much more. While my son no longer participates, my daughter and I continue to care for and love all the cats faithfully each week.  We already had two cats when we started, and even though I was determined to keep it at that, my heart and my kids had other ideas!  We adopted Jojo in January 2011 and Buddy (Merlin), a "special needs" cat, in October 2011, and they've added so much to our family.  Not only have I met some wonderful people through the organization who share my love for the cats, but many of the cats that have come and gone have left such a lasting impression on me and I will remember them fondly.  I really enjoy my volunteer work with Second Chance and being able to make even a little bit of a difference in the lives of the cats while they are with us!

For the last two years I have fostered cats and kittens with Second Chance Animal Rescue.  The knowledge I've acquired through this experience cannot be learned from a book.  From bottle feeding abandoned babies and nursing sick cats back to health- to working with cats that have not had much exposure to humans, each of these animals has had a positive impact on my own sense of worth.  It seems that they know you are there to help them. Second Chance's policy of not being allowed to adopt cats that I've fostered has proved invaluable.  It is extremely hard to let some of them go, but one of the reasons I chose to work with Second Chance is because of the scrutiny Ms. DeVita uses concerning adoptive applicants.  I feel safe in the fact that my little success stories will be raised in loving and caring homes.

We have been fostering for Second Chance Animal Rescue for about 3 years. We love to volunteer because we love to help something that cannot help itself. Some of the kittens we have had were motherless and needed bottle feeding every three hours, and some are scared and need regular human handling to help develop there little personalities. Having them in our home we give them the love and attention that shelters don’t always have the time or resources to offer. Giving a kitten a head start in this world when there is no other option is amazing. Second Chance Animal Rescue goes above and beyond to make sure every animal they come in contact with gets the love and care they deserve.

All of the cats at SCAR are in need of a loving home. While they are waiting to be adopted, they are loved and cared for by us volunteers. We make sure they are healthy, their cages are cleaned, and they are as happy as possible. I find volunteering very rewarding because we are giving the animals the love and affection that they deserve. All of the animals that end up with us have unfortunate stories, but they are incredibly lucky because they have been given a second chance. Although I have become attached to many cats over the years, it’s so great to see them go to their forever homes. It really makes me proud to be part of such a great organization.

There are many aspects that I like about Volunteering with Second Chance. One aspect is that I know I am making a difference. I am making a difference by helping to take care of the cats. Another aspect that I like about volunteering is that it teaches me responsibility. Volunteering at PetSmart with the group Second Chance has taught me to be more responsible by showing up on time and teaching me how to take care of the cats. What I like about Volunteering is that I know I am making a difference and I am learning responsibility. That's me on the right.
