Adoption Process

All our cats up for adoption have been spayed or neutered and have received all their vaccinations. They’ve also been fostered to be sure they are healthy and do not display aggression or behavior problems that would not make them good house pets.

We require all new parents to fill out an application. You’ll find these applications inside PetSmart or PetCo right outside our shelter area. Simply fill out the application and give to the store manager or slip under the shelter door, or fax to the number listed on the application.

We’ll need to know if you will be caring for your own pet, who would care for the pet if anything happened to you, and if you’ve owned a pet before. We require the names and phone numbers of a veterinarian as well two neighbors who can vouch that you are not an animal hoarder.

Checking these references can take as little as 2-3 business days or as long as a couple of weeks, depending on how easily we can get hold of your references. It’s always a good idea to tell your neighbors to expect a call from Second Chance and that we are not soliciting for donations! If all goes well, you’ll be able to take your new family member home the following Saturday.

If you’re thinking about adoption but haven’t found the exact cat you want yet, you can speed things up by getting preapproved. Once we have your application and have checked your references, you’ll be able to take your cat home then and there without waiting.
